Jongmyo Shrine English Tour Guide: Times, Free Entry to Nov 15 & Nov 7 Royal Rite [2026]

Want to see the most solemn place in Seoul, the shrine where Joseon's kings are still honoured with music and ritual? Then you need to crack the Jongmyo Shrine English tour system first! Jongmyo Shrine (종묘), a UNESCO World Heritage Site a short walk from Jongno 3-ga Station, does not work like Gyeongbokgung: on some days you can only enter with a guide at a fixed time.

And early November 2026 is a rare window: entry is free until November 15, and the autumn royal ancestral rite takes place on Saturday, November 7. This Easy Route Korea guide covers which days need a guide, English session times, ritual timing and the north-gate shortcut most tourists miss.

🗓️ 1. Jongmyo Shrine English Tour Times: The Day-by-Day Rules

On Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays you enter only on a timed guided session (about 50 minutes). On other open days you can walk in and explore at your own pace. Here's the regular week (it applies again from November 16):

*EN = free English guided session start time. November–January hours: 09:00–17:30, last entry 16:30. Foreigners aged 18 and under or 65 and over, and hanbok wearers, enter free.

Each timed session takes up to 200 people. Half the places can be reserved online and half are sold at the ticket booth, so solo travellers and couples can usually just buy a ticket at the booth before the session starts. Korean visitors can join foreign-language sessions only with a foreign companion, so the group stays international.

🆓 2. Free Jongmyo Entry Until Nov 15 & the Nov 7 Royal Rite

🎟️ Korea Grand Festival Free Period (Oct 29 – Nov 15, 2026)

  • Self-guided every open day: even on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, you can now walk in without joining a session, and admission is free.
  • Fewer English sessions: only 10:00 and 14:00 (Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sun). Japanese runs at 09:40 and 15:40, and Chinese at 11:00.
  • Still closed on Tuesdays: skip November 3 and November 10.

🥁 Jongmyo Chuhyang Daeje: Saturday, November 7

Jongmyo Jerye, the UNESCO-listed royal ancestral ritual with court music and the line dance known as ilmu, is held twice a year: on the first Sunday of May and the first Saturday of November. The autumn rite is free to watch, with no reservation:

Time What Happens
10:00–12:00Rite at Yeongnyeongjeon Hall (영녕전), the smaller hall with the raised central roof
14:00–16:30Main rite at Jeongjeon Hall (정전), with music and dance on the wide stone terrace
All dayKorean-only guided sessions; no foreign-language tours on this Saturday

ARRIVE EARLY
Seats aren't reserved, so the front fills first. Korean visitors who watched last year's autumn rite recommend arriving at least an hour before the 14:00 Jeongjeon rite. One trick: watch the morning rite, then go straight to Jeongjeon. The courtyard is shady and the rite runs over two hours, so bring a warm layer. Also note that the royal procession through downtown happens only at the May rite, not in November.

🧭 3. Inside Jongmyo: Gate, Spirit Path & Photo Spots

  1. Pick the right exit: use Jongno 3-ga Station Exit 11 (Line 1) or Exit 8 (Lines 3 and 5). Exit 11 leads through Jongmyo Square Park past the old hamabi stone, where officials once had to dismount, to the main gate, Oejeongmun (외대문).
  2. Stop at the square pond: just inside, the pond by Mangmyoru Pavilion has a round island in a square basin ("round heaven, square earth"). It is planted with a juniper instead of the usual palace pine, because the shrine burned juniper as incense. With autumn leaves reflected in it, it's a favourite photo stop.
  3. Take the side road to the halls: Korean visitors single out the path from the Jaegung (the king's preparation quarters) to the Jeonsacheong kitchen, a mix of maples, ginkgo and pines, as the prettiest autumn stretch.
  4. Finish at Jeongjeon, then Yeongnyeongjeon: Jeongjeon's long, plain red-pillared facade is too wide for one normal frame, so shoot straight on and let the lines run off the edges.

Spirit Path Etiquette

✅ Do
Walk on the side paths or the lower stones beside the raised centre lane.
Keep your voice down; this is still a working shrine.

🚫 Don't
Step on the raised middle stones. That is the sinro, reserved for ancestral spirits, and signs ask you to stay off it.
Use flash during rites.

🚶 4. After Your Jongmyo Shrine Tour: North Gate & Nearby

On Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and Wednesdays, Jongmyo opens its Bukshinmun (북신문) north gate. Restored in 2022, the walkway over Yulgok-ro takes you straight into Changgyeonggung Palace. Buy its ₩1,000 ticket at the machine by the gate (free on Wednesdays). From November to January the Jongmyo side of the gate closes at 16:30. Keen on palaces? Our Gyeongbokgung changing of the guard guide covers the 10:00 and 14:00 ceremonies and free hanbok entry, and the Seoul autumn foliage guide lists this season's palace hours.

Hungry? Gwangjang Market is a short walk east along Jongno for bindaetteok and mayak gimbap.
