However, many international visitors get confused by Express vs. Local trains, miss out on free transfer discounts, or accidentally sit in restricted seats. Here is your ultimate guide to riding the Seoul subway like a local!

🚆 1. Express(급행) vs. Local(일반) Trains

On major lines like Line 9(Brown) and Line 1(Dark Blue), two types of trains operate on the same track. Boarding the wrong train could cause you to skip your intended destination!

Train Type Korean Name Behavior Display Indicator
Local Train 일반(Il-ban) Stops at EVERY single station along the line. Green or White text on platform screens
Express Train 급행(Geup-haeng) Stops ONLY at major transfer & hub stations. RED text / Red Highlights on platform screens

🚨 Line 9 Express Alert!
Line 9 connects Gimpo Airport, Yeouido, and Gangnam quickly. Express trains save ~15 minutes, but skip smaller stations. Always double-check if your destination station has "Express Stop" marked on the subway map before boarding!

🔄 2. How Free Transfer Discounts Work

When using a rechargeable transit card(T-money, WOWPASS, M-Pass, or Climate Card), Seoul offers an integrated transfer discount system. You can transfer up to 4 times between subway lines and city buses without paying full base fares again!

Key Rules for Transfer Discounts:

  • 30-Minute Transfer Window: You must tap into your next subway gate or bus within 30 minutes of tapping out from the previous ride (extended to 60 mins between 9 PM and 7 AM).
  • ALWAYS TAP OUT: You MUST tap your transit card on the reader when exiting a bus or subway station. Forgetting to tap out forfeits your transfer discount and incurs penalty charges!
  • No Same-Line Re-entry: Exiting a subway station and tapping back into the exact same subway line/station within 30 minutes counts as a new trip (no transfer discount).

💡 3. Essential Seoul Subway Etiquette & Tips

  • Priority Seats (노약자석): Located at both far ends of every train car. These are strictly reserved for the elderly, disabled, and injured. Leave them empty even if the train is completely packed!
  • Pink Pregnant Seats (임산부 배려석): Marked with pink carpet and seat covers in the middle sections. Try to leave them open for expecting mothers.
  • Stand in Line: Wait behind the marked queuing lines on the platform floor. Always allow passengers to exit the train completely before stepping inside.
  • Follow Exit Numbers: Seoul subway stations are huge, often having 10 to 20 numbered exits. Always check which Exit Number is closest to your venue on Naver Map before leaving the platform!

Tap your card, follow the colored floor guide lines, check for Express indicators, and enjoy fast rides across Seoul!
